Nervous System Hacks: How to Avoid the Top 5 Procrastination Traps

If you find yourself struggling with procrastination, you're not alone. So many of my clients come to me when they are having a hard time getting started - and staying - on track towards their goals.

But did you know that your nervous system plays a role in regulating your ability to focus and get things done?

When you're feeling overwhelmed or anxious, your body's sympathetic nervous system kicks in, preparing you for a fight or flight response.

This can make it difficult to concentrate and stay focused on the task at hand. On the other hand, when your parasympathetic nervous system is activated, you feel relaxed and focused, making it easier to get things done.

The problem is, when you’re in fight-flight for too long, your system gets overwhelmed and you can move into the dorsal vagal state - a state of shutdown and paralysis that makes it hard to find motivation and get this done.

So, how can you avoid procrastination traps?

Here are some tips to help you regulate your nervous system and get things done:

incorporate somatic exercises into your routine

By incorporating practices like orienting, grounding, and pendulation into your daily routine, you can develop greater resilience to stress and better handle the demands of your life.

Exercise regularly

Regular exercise is a great way to regulate your nervous system and reduce stress. Even just a few minutes of physical activity can help improve your mood and focus.

Get enough sleep

Lack of sleep can make it difficult to concentrate and stay focused. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night to help regulate your nervous system and improve your productivity.

Practice mindfulness

Mindfulness is a great way to regulate your nervous system and reduce stress. Try practicing mindfulness meditation or other mindfulness exercises to help you stay focused and productive.

Take breaks

Taking breaks throughout the day can help regulate your nervous system and improve your productivity. Try taking a short walk, practicing deep breathing, or doing a quick meditation to help you recharge and refocus.

When you regulate your nervous system, you can improve your ability to focus and avoid procrastination traps. It’s not just about willpower – your body and mind are connected, and taking care of your nervous system is an important part of staying productive and getting things done.
