Why Rest Isn't Just About Doing Less: 3 Ways to Light Up Your Downtime

Burnout is a nasty business. It sucks the life out of even the most passionate purpose-driven entrepreneur.

Suddenly the things we enjoyed feel like they are just another task on a never-ending to-do list. You feel like you're constantly juggling too many responsibilities and struggling to find time for yourself. It’s exhausting to even think about adding meditation or mindfulness to our day, even when we know it will help.

The misconception about rest is that it means we need to completely come to a standstill and stop. Yes, sometimes that’s what our bodies need - rest, stillness, quiet. And sometimes, what we need is not doing less for the sake of doing less, but doing more of what lights us up.

Recharging our batteries isn’t only about coming to a standstill, but also about revitalising our passions. But be honest here, do you even remember what you love doing? Do you even know what lights you up anymore?

Or have you been hustling in the grind for so long that you’ve completely lost touch with the things that actually bring you joy.

It doesn't have to be complicated. Rest and recharging can be as simple as taking a 5 minute dance break, or cooking your favourite meal. It can be taking a walk, or spending some quiet time cuddling your kid (or fur-kid).

It's time to redefine our relationship with rest.

Here are three ways you can incorporate more of what you love into your rest time:

Rediscover Your Passions:

Take some time to reflect on the things that make you happy and fulfilled. Maybe it's hiking in nature, baking, reading books, or painting. Whatever it is, prioritise this in your schedule. Not only will it help you relax and recharge, but it will also give you a sense of purpose and fulfillment outside of work.

Set Boundaries:

It's easy to fall into the trap of working around the clock, especially when you're passionate about what you do. But it's crucial to set boundaries and carve out time for rest and relaxation. This can mean leaving work at a certain time, turning off your phone after a certain hour, or saying "no" to commitments that don't align with your priorities.

Take Care of Your Body and Mind:

Rest is about doing more of what you enjoy, but it's also about taking care of your body and mind. Prioritise getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and engaging in physical activities that you love. Additionally, practice mindfulness or meditation to reduce stress and boost mental clarity. By taking care of yourself, you'll be better equipped to handle the demands of your career and personal life with energy and enthusiasm.

Rest isn’t a luxury or added bonus. It’s a vital part of the productivity cycle - and your wellbeing. By doing more of what lights you up, you'll be able to recharge and bring your best self to all areas of your life, including your career and business.
